Recognizing young talent
Centre for International and Defence Policy Director Michael Murphy has been named one of Kingston鈥檚 Top 40 Under 40 by Kingston Economic Development.
The award recognizes the contributions and achievements of young Kingstonians who are already having an impact in their field. The award is overseen by the network at Kingston Economic Development, a community of driven and motivated young professionals who are looking to connect, grow and learn from each other. The goal is to empower young professionals with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to achieve their professional and entrepreneurial goals.
鈥淎s a lifelong Kingstonian, this kind of community recognition is very special,鈥 says Dr. Murphy. 鈥淚 grew up here and have been involved in the community in different ways, as an elected school board trustee, president of the Fort Henry Guard Foundation, and volunteer for a neighbourhood rink.鈥
鈥淧rofessionally, it is a real honour to receive this award for academic work from the city. Sometimes there's a disconnection between town and gown, so I appreciate that Kingston Economic Development has recognized the value of the work we do at the CIDP.鈥
Dr. Murphy attended Regiopolis Notre Dame for high school and earned an MA from Queen鈥檚 University. His undergrad and PhD are from the University of Ottawa. He returned to the Queen鈥檚 community as a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow and was appointed as Director of the CIDP on July 1 of this year.
鈥淚 rejoined the Queen's community in 2022 as a postdoctoral fellow working with St茅phanie Martel. Once I was here at the CIDP, there were opportunities to expand my research on the Canadian Armed Forces' approach to quantum and other emerging technologies.鈥 He noted the significant impact of finding the Centre after finishing his PhD. 鈥淎fter a long couple of years where everything was online, the small but welcoming community at CIDP felt like my academic home.鈥
Dr. Murphy has also worked with the , including a fellowship at their program, and more recently as a contributor in the lead-up to the G7 meetings chaired by Canada this summer in Kananaskis. His work included co-authoring an industry survey report and co-chairing an expert roundtable session in the lead-up to the G7 Summit where world leaders signed .
The Kingston Young Professionals Network will celebrate the Top 40 Under 40 award winners at a gala on Wednesday, September 17.
