Academic Considerations and Accommodations

If there are circumstances beyond your control impacting your academics, determine which type of request it fits into. 

  • Academic Consideration is meant for short term circumstances
  • Academic Accommodation is meant for permanent/prolonged or temporary disabilities.

Excused Absence for a Significant Event (REASE)

Academic consideration is considered for conflicts between academics and exceptional events. These may include:

  • Varsity or non-varsity athletic events
  • Showcasing an achievement or talent on a provincial/national/international stage as a distinguished guest (i.e, singing the national anthem at the Olympics)
  • Serving in the Student Reserve Forces

Academic Consideration for Extenuating Circumstances

Academic consideration is meant for short term circumstances beyond your control that impact your academics. These may include:

  • Sudden physical or mental illness
  • Serious injury to self or significant others
  • Death in the family/significant other
  • Traumatic event
  • Serious personal or family crisis

To request academic consideration, please contact your faculty.

  • Faculty of Arts and Science (online portal for requests for academic consideration – paper requests not accepted)
  •  (go to the Commerce Portal for your program for additional information)
  • School of Graduate Studies
  •  (if you are in concurrent-ed, contact your undergraduate faculty otherwise, contact the Associate Dean)

Extenuating Circumstances DO NOT include: personal or family events; holidays, travel, or weddings; academic or exam stress (if severe, contact Student Wellness Services); transportation or technological difficulties. In these circumstances, please contact your instructor directly to discuss.

Academic Accommodations

Students who have a permanent, persistent/prolonged, or temporary disability in the following categories are eligible to register with Queen's Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) as soon as possible: attention/neurodiversity, hearing/vision, learning disability, medical/brain injury, mental health, physical disability.
