Visitors gather around an interactive exhibit during Science Rendezvous Kingston.
When people can experience science first-hand and take part, they begin to see it differently, building an interest in learning more and further exploration. Science Rendezvous Kingston is built around that idea.
On May 9, Science Rendezvous Kingston will happen at Slush Puppie Place and along The Tragically Hip Way. Hosted by Queen鈥檚 University, the free event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and brings together researchers, staff, students, and community groups to share science with the public. This year鈥檚 theme, Ignite, focuses on sparking long-term interest through hands-on experiments and interactive learning.
鈥淪cience Rendezvous Kingston brings our researchers and students into the community to share their enthusiasm for science and talk about the work happening in labs and research spaces across Queen鈥檚,鈥 says Nancy Ross, Vice-Principal Research. 鈥淭hat kind of direct connection helps make research more accessible and shows people how science is part of everyday life.鈥
Now in its 15th year, Science Rendezvous Kingston has become a longstanding community event at Queen鈥檚.
Science on display
More than 60 booths will be set up, offering a wide range of activities across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- Visitors can explore physics in action, from how forces and motion behave to how different phenomena can be seen and experienced.
- Health and medical booths show how new technologies are used in care and treatment. Visitors can learn how the heart and lungs work, see how imaging tools let researchers look inside the body, and explore materials used in modern medicine.
- Engineering booths invite visitors to test ideas and solve practical problems. Activities include working with robots, experimenting with flight, and seeing how machines are designed and built.
- Environmental exhibits focus on how ecosystems are changing and how scientists are working to protect them, including interactive activities on invasive species, water contamination, and sustainability.
- Wildlife and conservation are also featured, with opportunities to learn about local species and rehabilitation efforts, as well as exhibits that explore Earth鈥檚 history through rocks and fossils and show how life has changed over time.
These are just some of the activities visitors can explore.
Live shows and demonstrations will also take place on the main stage, including Smashing Strawberries, a live DNA extraction that introduces genetics, Phenomenal Physics, which explores sound waves and other phenomena, and the Chemistry Magic Show, featuring colourful reactions and fast-paced experiments.
A welcoming space for families
A quieter, sensory-friendly space will be available for visitors who need a break from the main crowd. The area offers hands-on activities in a calmer setting, recognized by the City of Kingston鈥檚 Celebrating Accessibility Award in 2025.
Free parking will be available at , with a Kingston Trolley shuttle running throughout the day between locations.
