Queen's Homecoming 2025 was one for the books 鈥 and the faces.
From Oct. 17-19, a record 3,529 alumni registered to return to campus, with plenty more joining the fun.
The weekend overflowed with tricolour spirit, from the grand reopening of the JDUC to the parade to Richardson Stadium to the reunions across Queen鈥檚 and all over town. Even a 31-28 football loss to the Windsor Lancers couldn鈥檛 dim Gaels鈥 pride.
But at its heart, Homecoming is about people: the smiles, the stories, and the memories they bring back to campus. Here are 10 of the faces that made this year鈥檚 celebration unforgettable.
Who: Erin Pyle, BNSc鈥20, Emma Lane, BNSc鈥20, and Chelsea Mckoy, BNSc鈥20
Where: Common Ground Coffeehouse, Five Year Reunion Coffee Up
This Homecoming feels like a long time coming for nursing grads Chelsea, Emma, and Erin. Their final year was upended by COVID, cutting short campus life and celebrations. For Emma, it鈥檚 her first time back. 鈥淣ot having a graduation, I wanted something to mark it.鈥 Erin laughs: 鈥淧art of the tradition of Queen鈥檚 alumni is returning for Homecoming, so I thought I鈥檇 uphold my alumni duties!鈥 Chelsea says it鈥檚 incredible to see how far they鈥檝e come. 鈥淲e became friends in first year, when we didn鈥檛 think we鈥檇 make it here. But almost 10 years later, here we are. We made it.鈥
Who: Joe Smillie, Artsci鈥70, Ed鈥71
Where: Grant Hall, Welcome and Check-In
The first and only other time Joe Smillie (aptly pronounced 鈥渟miley鈥) came to Homecoming was 10 years ago, for his 45th reunion. Now he鈥檚 back, up from his home in Vermont, for his 55th. 鈥淲e missed our 50th because of COVID, so we said, 鈥楽ee you in 2025, if we make it!鈥欌 he laughs. 鈥淏ut I just love it, all of it. The parade. Seeing everybody. Queen鈥檚 Bands. And the football game, which we better win 鈥 we鈥檙e playing the Lancers!鈥 (Sorry, Joe.)
Who: Marcos Otazo, Sc鈥93, and Marcia Otazo, Com鈥95
Where: Outside Clark Hall
For siblings Marcos and Marcia Otazo, Homecoming is a shared promise fulfilled. 鈥淚 came two years ago for my 30th reunion,鈥 says Marcos. 鈥淭his time, I鈥檓 here for moral support and fun.鈥 Marcia smiles: 鈥淲hen he came two years ago, I made him promise that he鈥檚 got to come with me for my 30th!鈥 Now living in the U.S., they鈥檙e taking it all in 鈥 the new buildings, the familiar streets, the path to today. 鈥淨ueen鈥檚 and Kingston were huge parts of my life,鈥 says Marcia. 鈥淭hey shaped who I am.鈥
Who: Jim Rose, Artsci鈥70, Ed鈥71, and Joan Rose, Artsci鈥69, Ed鈥70
Where: Grant Hall, Welcome and Check-In
It鈥檚 a true Homecoming for Jim and Joan Rose, who first met at a party at Morris Hall almost 60 years ago. But their first date to The Pirates of Penzance at Grant Hall was, by their own admission, a flop. That is, until a spontaneous, post-opera game of ping-pong turned awkward silence into laughter. 鈥淲e just laughed and laughed,鈥 says Joan. That laughter led to daily letters, love, and a 1969 wedding. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been in Kingston ever since,鈥 says Jim. 鈥淎nd it all started right here.鈥
Who: Queen鈥檚 Chancellor Shelagh Rogers, Artsci鈥77, LLD鈥19
Where: John Deutsch University Centre, Opening Celebration
Standing in the newly revitalized JDUC, Chancellor Rogers can鈥檛 stop smiling. 鈥淚t feels like the building is literally lifting you up 鈥 the light, I can鈥檛 get over the light,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd features like the Seven Grandfather Teachings etched in the steps of the Agora are beautiful. It鈥檚 all been so respectfully done.鈥 Between receptions and the football game, she鈥檚 soaking up Homecoming energy. 鈥淚t鈥檚 wonderful that this is all happening during Homecoming 鈥 seeing the alumni, the joy. It just feels right.鈥
Who: Eastal Law, Artsci鈥25
Where: Agnes Benidickson Field, Fall Harvest Alumni Gathering
Taking a quick break from her art booth, Eastal Law smiles as she talks about her work: prints fittingly inspired by memory, childhood, and growth. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e from my thesis exhibition,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 was part of the second last graduating class of fine arts before it switches to visual arts, so it feels special to share them here.鈥 For her, being part of Homecoming is about more than selling art. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the community 鈥 that鈥檚 why I chose Queen鈥檚.鈥
Who: Kayla Payne, Sc鈥27, and Adrian Payne, Sc鈥93, MASc鈥97
Where: Outside Carruthers Hall
It鈥檚 Adrian Payne鈥檚 first Homecoming in 25 years, and he鈥檚 back for a special reason: his two daughters are now in Smith Engineering, including Kayla, smiling beside him. 鈥淭he student engineering design teams at Queen鈥檚 today are incredible,鈥 he says. 鈥淲hat鈥檚 available now pales in comparison to when I was here, and those skills apply directly to the workplace.鈥 Still, some things never change. 鈥淟ike the stairwell to Clark Hall Pub 鈥 that鈥檚 just fantastic!鈥
Who: Tim Andrews, Artsci鈥16
Where: University Avenue, Alumni Parade to Richardson Stadium
Homecoming wouldn鈥檛 be Homecoming without Queen鈥檚 Bands, at least not for Tim Andrews. 鈥淚鈥檝e come every year since I graduated,鈥 says the Kingston native. A proud former section leader and clarinetist, he grew up watching Queen鈥檚 Bands from the stands at Richardson Stadium and always knew he鈥檇 join. 鈥淧laying on the field, getting the crowd going 鈥 those are really special memories for me,鈥 he says. 鈥淚n 2014, we even marched in the Boston St. Patrick鈥檚 Parade. That was just legendary to take the Queen鈥檚 spirit abroad.鈥
Who: Cam Johnston, Artsci鈥85
Where: Richardson Stadium, Homecoming Football Game
With the roar of the crowd all around him, Cam Johnston laughs: 鈥淚 had too much fun at Queen鈥檚, so I took the five-year path.鈥 A former AMS and ASUS leader, he鈥檚 been a regular at Homecoming ever since. 鈥淭he friendships you make here 鈥 you never lose them,鈥 he says. 鈥淵ou can see someone you haven鈥檛 seen in 40 years and you鈥檙e right back in the groove.鈥 As the Gaels play on, he grins. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so nice to be back.鈥
Who: Johnelle Lanham, Sc鈥05, MASc鈥07, and Kendra Hartley, Sc鈥05
Where: University Avenue
Back for their 20th reunion, Johnelle and Kendra are taking a relaxed approach to their first real Homecoming since 2007. 鈥淲e鈥檙e just going with the flow, seeing what happens and who鈥檚 around,鈥 says Johnelle. The trip so far has been a mix of nostalgia and discovery. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so great seeing a lot of the same restaurants and storefronts on Princess Street,鈥 says Kendra. 鈥淎nd the JDUC 鈥 spent a lot of time there,鈥 adds Johnelle with a grin. 鈥淟ots of doughnuts, lots of coffee.鈥
Next year is Queen鈥檚 100th Homecoming. Stay tuned to queensu.ca/alumni for full details on everything being planned for the milestone weekend!
