First Year Student Residence Application

Residence Commitment

The First-Year Student Residence Application is for undergraduate students starting their studies in the Fall and entering the first year of a full-time, on-campus degree program.

Queen鈥檚 will guarantee a space in residence for:

  • Students who receive an offer of admission to Queen鈥檚 on or before April 15, 2026.
  • International students who receive an offer of admission to Queen鈥檚 on or before May 30, 2026.
  • Indigenous students who receive an offer of admission to Queen鈥檚 on or before May 30, 2026.

It is anticipated that 90%+ of all offers of admission will include a residence guarantee. You can apply to residence before you accept your offer of admission.

To remain eligible for the guarantee, you must apply for residence and your deposit must be received by the application deadline of June 1, 2026, at 4 pm ET. You must also have successfully accepted your offer to Queen's by the deadline.

If you receive an offer of admission after April 15, 2026, that does not contain a residence guarantee, and you apply for residence and your deposit is received by the deadline of June 1, 2026, at 4 pm ET, then you will be placed in a lottery for access to residence. You will be notified within 10 business days of the deadline whether you have a residence space or have been placed on the waitlist.

If you receive an offer of admission after June 1, 2026, you may apply to the residence waitlist.

Residence offers will continue to be made, as spaces become available over the summer.

Refer to your offer letter from Undergraduate Admission and Recruitment if you are not sure if residence is guaranteed for you.

Step 1

Receive an offer of admission to Queen鈥檚 University

Applying for residence is a separate process from your Queen鈥檚 University program application. You must have an offer of admission to Queen鈥檚 University to apply for residence, but you do not have to have accepted it.

Students eligible for residence are eligible for a bed space in residence and not for a particular room type or building. We have a range of room types and washroom configurations across our residence buildings. The Residence Contract and associated fees are for the full academic year (i.e., both Fall and Winter terms). Specific details are outlined on the Fees page.

Step 2

Find out more about living in residence

Living in residence encourages active participation in the community 鈥 in residence, locally and globally. We encourage you to be respectful and engage civically as you grow and personally develop as a member of the Queen鈥檚 residence community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I guaranteed residence?

Queen鈥檚 will guarantee a space in residence for:

  • Students who receive an offer of admission to Queen鈥檚 on or before April 15, 2026
  • International students who receive an offer of admission to Queen鈥檚 on or before  May 30, 2026
  • Indigenous students who receive an offer of admission to Queen鈥檚 on or before May 30, 2026.

If you receive a first offer of admission after April 15, 2026, that does not contain a residence guarantee, and you apply for residence and your deposit is received by the deadline of June 1, 2026, at 4 pm ET, then you will be placed in a lottery for access to residence. You will be notified within 10 business days of the application deadline whether you have a residence space. If you are not given a space in residence you will be moved to the waitlist automatically.

If you receive your first offer of admission after June 1, 2026, you may apply to the residence waitlist. Residence offers will continue to be made as spaces become available over the summer. Please refer to your offer letter from Undergraduate Admission and Recruitment if you are not sure if residence is guaranteed for you.

What happens if I get my first offer from Queen's after April 15?

If you get an offer of admission after April 15 you can still apply to residence. Once the application and deposit deadline pass on June 1 at 4 pm ET, we will look to see how many total applications we have received, and how many bed spaces we have. If we have more applications than bed spaces, we will run a lottery for those students who received offers after April 15 to determine who will be offered a space in residence. If you are not given a space in residence you will be moved to the waitlist automatically.

Do I need an offer of admission to Queen's in order to apply to residence?

Yes, you need an offer of admission to apply. However, you do not have to have accepted the offer to apply to residence.

What happens if I do not apply to residence by the deadline?

You can apply to join the waitlist, which will open approximately 10 business days following the application deadline.

I have paid the deposit before the deadline, but I did not apply to residence - am I still guaranteed?

No. You must pay the deposit and make sure it is received by the deadline and apply to residence by the deadline for your application to be considered complete.

I am applying to a competitive program. Am I being disadvantaged if not all offers are being made by April 15?

No. Undergraduate Admission and Recruitment anticipates making 90% of offers for all programs by April 15.

How many spaces are there in residence?

Approximately 4800 spaces are available for incoming First-Year first-year students in Fall 2026.

I deferred from 2025 - do I need to apply to residence for 2026?

Yes, you will need to apply and ensure your deposit is received by the June 1, 4 pm ET deadline.

Can I choose who to share a room with?

Yes. If you know who you want to share a room with, you can invite them into a roommate group. If you do not know who you want to room with, you can search other students looking to be in a roommate group, and invite them to be part of a group.

How many people can be in a roommate group?

Up to 4 people can be in a roommate group.

If I am in a roommate group what rooms will I see in self-selection?

You will see all multi-occupancy rooms that are available at your self-selection date and time. We typically find that there are spaces in multi-occupancy rooms even toward the end of self-selection. However, we cannot guarantee what inventory will be available and when, as this is determined by the choices previous students will have made.

I am hoping to be in a Single Plus room, and I want to choose who I share a washroom with - can I do this?

Unfortunately, owing to the popularity of the Single Plus room style, we do not allow this. However, if you have been approved for a Single Plus through the accommodations process, you may create a roommate group with someone else who has also been approved for a Single Plus through the accommodations process.

When can I create my roommate group?

You can create a roommate group starting in early July and during self-selection. You cannot form a roommate group on the application form or before the application deadline.

Can I remove myself from a roommate group?

Yes. If you remove yourself from a 2-person roommate group, your group will be disbanded, and you will choose your rooms at your individually allocated self-selection date and time.

How do roommate groups choose their room?

A lottery will determine each group member's self-selection date and time. The preferred roommate group can choose a multi-occupancy room during any of the time slots assigned to the group members. The first member of the group to choose a room will pull the rest of the group members into the room.

My friend forgot to apply to residence / is on the waitlist - can they be my roommate?

No. Students who do not apply to residence cannot be in a roommate group. Students on the waitlist cannot be in a roommate group unless they are offered a space in residence and accept before self-selection.

Are there any other exclusions?

Yes, some restrictions apply. For example, if you have requested to be in the Quiet Floor UC, which is all Single or Single Plus rooms, you cannot request a roommate. Similarly, if you have requested and been approved for a Single room through the accommodations process, you cannot be in a roommate group.  Or if you have applied to and been accepted into an LLC, but your friend has not been accepted into the LLC, you cannot be in a roommate group unless you withdraw from the LLC.

After July 1, 2026 at 4 pm ET, your $805 deposit is non-refundable.

The deposit is also non-refundable for students made an offer for residence after July 1.

EXCEPTIONS: If the student鈥檚 offer of admission is revoked, or they are approved for a deferral, or they are deemed not eligible for residence but are still attending Queen鈥檚, we will refund the full amount.

I paid my deposit and applied on time, but I was not guaranteed residence with my offer, and I am now on the waitlist 鈥 can I get a refund for my deposit?

Yes, we will refund the deposit in full. If you are subsequently offered a space in residence, you will need to pay the deposit again.

I am a Major Award Winner 鈥 do I need to pay the deposit?

Queen鈥檚 Financial Aid and Awards Office will be covering the cost of the residence application deposit ($805) to allow Major Award Winners to apply for residence with no financial barrier.

In order for the Financial Aid and Awards office to disburse award funding to your student account in time for the June 1 residence application deadline, you will need to submit your residence application by May 25 at the latest. The Financial Aid and Awards office will not be able to cover the deposit prior to the June 1 deadline for students who have not applied for residence by this date.

If you have already applied for residence, no further action is required. If you have already paid your residence deposit, this additional funding disbursement will remain as credit on your student account for use in the upcoming academic year towards future charges on your account.

If you cancel your application for residence, you will not owe any money. You will not be eligible for a refund as the money is disbursed as part of an award. Exceptions will apply if you paid the deposit before Financial Aid and Awards applied the deposit payment.

Are the fees per term or per year?

Per year. Please note that fees cover the academic year up until 3 pm after a student鈥檚 last exam, and do not automatically cover the whole month of April.

Are the fees for multi-occupancy rooms per person or per room?

Do the fees include meal plan?

Health and Non-Health Accommodations

We understand that the decision to move into residence can come with many questions and concerns and that there are a wide range of reasons for requesting an accommodation for accessibility or other reasons.

  • Review our Intake Guide so you know what to do and what to expect.
  • Find residence health and non-health accommodation forms on the .

Deadline for applying for accommodations: June 1, 2026, at 4 pm ET.

New or amended forms received after the deadline will be reviewed on an ongoing basis but room availability may be limited, and late accommodation requests may not be able to be resolved prior to self-selection or move-in.

Room Self Selection

Self-selection allows you to choose your own residence room and building based on availability during your self-selection date and time. Your self-selection date and time are allocated by lottery. If you have an earlier self-selection date and time, you will select from a larger pool of available buildings and room types. If your self-selection date and time are later, less inventory will be available when you select.

Your self-selection time slot will be sent to your Queen鈥檚 email in early July and self-selection will take place from mid to end of July. If you have not chosen a room when your self-selection period closes, the Residence Admissions team will place you based on the remaining room inventory.
