Choosing GPHY After Your First Year

Your first year is a general year of study. We recommend registering in GPHY 101 and GPHY 102, as they are required for second-year Geography courses. Explore our courses.

If your plan reads "ASC1" at the end of first year and you are entering second year in the Fall, you must select a plan in SOLUS in mid to late May. Attend  and consult  for guidance. Approved programs appear in early June, with course selection opening in early July.

Admission to GPHY is based on your Queen鈥檚 University GPA. Students who do not meet the automatic admission cut-off are placed on a pending list, with offers made in descending GPA order until the program is full. If extenuating circumstances have affected your GPA, contact the GPHY Undergraduate Chair before plan selection.

Enhance Your Degree with Combined Programs and Certificates

Overview

This program is designed for students who want to deepen their research skills and pursue a Master鈥檚 degree in Geography while completing their undergraduate degree.

Students in the program can take up to two graduate-level courses (3.0 credit units each) during their fourth year, with at least one 800-level (graduate-only) course. These courses count as electives toward the undergraduate degree and provide a foundation for advanced standing in the Master鈥檚 program. A minimum grade of B+ is required in graduate courses to qualify for advanced standing.

Benefits

  • Reduce overall study time by one term, lowering costs and accelerating entry into the workforce.
  • Gain hands-on research experience and advanced analytical skills.
  • Prepare for careers in government, industry, or doctoral studies.

Eligibility

  • Must be a Geography major entering the fourth year with a GPA of 3.5+ in Geography courses.
  • Fourth-year thesis work can provide a foundation for graduate research (cannot be duplicated for MA/MSc thesis).

Admission

Apply to Combined Program:

Submit a one-page letter of academic goals, resume, transcript, and proposed graduate courses to the Undergraduate and Graduate Coordinators at uggphy@queensu.ca and gpplgrad@queensu.ca. Applications are reviewed by the Undergraduate and Graduate Associate Heads.

Apply to MA/MSc Program:

Deadline: January 31 of the fourth year.

Requirements: GPA 3.7+ in final two undergraduate years, B+ or higher in graduate courses, and completion of the standard SGSPA application.

Overview

This program is designed for students who want to combine an undergraduate degree with a professional Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MPL) degree. The combined degree allows students to complete both degrees in about 15 months after finishing their undergraduate studies, rather than the usual two years for the MPL.

Students in the program take four graduate-level Planning courses during their third and/or fourth year:

  • Two courses count as electives toward the undergraduate degree.
  • Two courses are 鈥渃ourses additional to program鈥 to accelerate completion of the MPL.
  • Undergraduate thesis or seminar topics can be aligned with Planning research or reports for continuity.

This structure provides a manageable fourth-year workload while allowing students to integrate their undergraduate knowledge with professional Planning skills. Eligible students come from Geography, Civil Engineering, Kinesiology & Health Studies, or Environmental Studies, depending on the pathway.

Benefits

  • Complete the M.PL. degree in 15 months after the undergraduate degree.
  • Gain a multidisciplinary skill set in planning, GIS, transportation, environmental studies, health, or urban development.
  • Increase professional qualifications and broaden employment prospects.
  • Prepare for careers in municipal and provincial governments, consulting, public utilities, and planning organizations.

Eligibility

  • Highly motivated students in Geography, Civil Engineering, Kinesiology & Health Studies, or Environmental Studies.
  • GPA requirements:
    • Geography: 3.5+ in undergraduate courses
    • Civil Engineering: approximately 3.7+ in final-year courses
    • Kinesiology & Health Studies / Environmental Studies: 80%+ average in previous year
  • Maintain minimum GPA in Planning courses (B+ or equivalent) during undergraduate program.

Admission

Apply to Combined Program:

Contact the appropriate faculty or program coordinator to express interest and discuss thesis alignment:

Early decision allows students to select undergraduate thesis topics aligned with Planning.

Apply to M.PL. Program:

Submit a formal application via the School of Graduate Studies portal in the fall term of the fourth year.

Requirements: Maintain GPA thresholds in undergraduate and Planning courses and complete required graduate-level courses.

Experiential Learning

I received funding through the Queen鈥檚 University NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) program, allowing me to begin an undergraduate thesis project under the supervision of Dr. Melissa Lafreni猫re. Using water samples collected from Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory on Melville Island, Nunavut, this project focuses on aquatic systems affected by permafrost disturbances related to climate change. Working in the Facility for Biogeochemical Research on Environmental Change and the Cryosphere (FaBRECC) lab has provided me with the opportunity to use cutting-edge technology and equipment to conduct hands-on research.
