Environmental Studies

I am a PhD student participating in the CEC-REN under Theme B: New Technologies to Detect CECs. My project focuses on investigating wastewater surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) under a One Health lens. I hold a BSc in biology from Western University (2021), and a MSc in microbiology from the University of Waterloo (2023). My current research is supervised by Dr. Stephen Brown, Dr. Anna Majury (Public Health Ontario), and Dr. Paul Hynds (Technological University Dublin).

Rhiannon is also a CEC-REN Youth Outreach and Education Coordinator.

I am a PhD candidate in the Chemical Engineering Department at Queen鈥檚 University with a research focus on environmental engineering. My work centers on developing advanced treatment processes-including adsorption, membrane filtration, and catalysis-to address water pollution challenges. Currently, I am investigating the adsorption of contaminants of emerging concern, such as PFAS and pharmaceuticals, from Canadian freshwater systems. Within CEC-REN, I contribute to research efforts aimed at advancing innovative and sustainable water treatment technologies for protecting aquatic environments.

CEC-REN visits Perth Road Public School

Thank you to Perth Road Public School and @Angela Lyon for the invitation to visit and present about contaminants in water systems! 馃挧馃敩
@Angela Lyon and @Rachel Korchinsky spent the day diving into the fascinating world of water contaminants, exploring science demos, and the power of invention, idea generation, and intellectual property (bridging chemistry to society!) with a phenomenal class of students. 馃寠鉁
Huge thanks to the staff and students for welcoming CEC-REN so warmly!

Science Rendezvous 2025

On May 10, 2025, the ORF CEC-REN participated in Kingston鈥檚 annual鈥疭cience Rendezvous鈥痚vent, engaging with local residents through a series of  interactive and educational activities for families. This outreach initiative aimed to spark public interest in emerging environmental contaminants in water and promote public awareness of both advancements and limitations of current waste disposal methods, and methods of contaminant detection and treatment.
