Leading the Way Back to Work

To support our leadership community, in September 2021 we hosted a collaborative conversation focusing on how to navigate emotion, and support our teams in the transition back to the workplace. We spent most of this time in breakout rooms to help build connections and share some real strategies about how to keep empathy, kindness, and flexibility front of mind.

In fact, this session was so popular we repeated it in November 2021, where we focussed on saying "no", self-compassion, and motivation based on following your "why".

EDII with heart: Some ideas of how to lead from the front

Thursday February 24, 2022
10:00 am - 11:00 am

Location

Zoom

Join us for insights and personal stories from Edward Nkole, Finance Officer at the Arthur B. McDonald Canadian Astroparticle Physics Research Institute in the department of Physics:

How often do we get to hear from the subject? Being a 鈥榬acialized individual,鈥 I have often been the subject or intended beneficiary of advocacy by well-intentioned persons who want to better my life and people who may look like me. This is especially true in western workspaces where EDII is a central theme. However, it seems fitting that I should have the chance to offer a perspective. What has been my personal journey and the impact of the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigeneity (EDII) on it?

EDII with heart: I share some ideas of how to lead from the front from my sixteen-year journey at Queen鈥檚 and in Kingston. Having been an observer and a participant in EDII initiatives, but most often the subject, I offer principles that have worked for me and would likely work for the leader looking to make a real and heartfelt difference in the lives of the individuals they lead. It is possible to be authentic as you focus on bringing about real change.

Borrowing from a quote, 鈥淒on鈥檛 pretend to love people, really love them.(CE)鈥 This is possible when we commit ourselves to the change we want to see.

How it works

  • to be a mentor, mentee or both. Being a mentor does not have to be time consuming! With your experience, you already have the skills needed to support an up-and-coming professional at Queen鈥檚. Regardless of your background, you have something to offer. We want your expertise!
  • On February 14, we will have 5-10 minute virtual break-out rooms for individuals (either one-to-one or in small groups) to introduce themselves. We will aim to have 4-5 rounds of interactions so lots of connections get made.
  • We'll briefly debrief and then send you on your way to connect with someone you've met in the session and continue your conversation around exploring the potential of a mentorship match.
  • All attendees will receive links to mentorship resources.
