As someone who has lived in Kingston for their entire life, I have nothing but good things to say about the city. One thing I love about living off-campus in Kingston is the numerous activities and experiences available to you even after completing your time in residence. Being a student town, Kingston has a unique vibe, and a closely connected community can be found among students living in the University District. Although I grew up in Kingston, experiencing the city through the lens of a Queen鈥檚 University student has given me a new perspective on the place that I love the most.
Kingston has a vibrant downtown atmosphere featuring countless adorable shops, delicious places to eat, and a quaint town square. When touring universities in the twelfth grade, it was hard to find a university city with a downtown that compared to Kingston鈥檚. Unlike most municipalities that shut down city programming in the winter, Kingston continues to host many activities. Whether you want to skate in Market Square, take a quick bus to see the lights at Fort Henry, attend a craft market or more, there is something for everyone to be found here. However, Kingston really shines in the summer. With the pier open, the markets running, and the flowers in bloom, it鈥檚 hard not to fall in love with Kingston鈥檚 charm and homey atmosphere. If you haven鈥檛 returned to your student town in the summer, I suggest you do! Especially if you have signed a May lease, it is important to check in on your property over the summer. Make a trip of it and have some fun!
Most Queen鈥檚 students become familiar with the downtown scene of Kingston shortly after beginning at the university. As someone who calls Kingston home, I would highly recommend exploring areas outside of Kingston鈥檚 centre. Just a quick bus ride can take you to the mall, the thrift stores, glow in the dark mini golf, pottery painting and more. Although Kingston鈥檚 West and East ends are more residential, there are still plenty of worthwhile experiences to be had that will only continue to add to your experience at Queen鈥檚 University.
Most people considering off-campus life at Queen鈥檚 can only think about the expenses and responsibilities. I encourage you to take advantage of this new stage of your life to truly experience the city that you鈥檙e living in. When living in residence, it鈥檚 easy to stay on campus. Now that you鈥檝e moved out, take some time to explore! You never know what kind of hidden gems you can find in Kingston.
