The Vice-Principal Research Portfolio is calling for applications for the , recognizing 鈥渢ransformational research that shows the 成人大片 potential to address the world鈥檚 most urgent environmental challenges.鈥 This prize was created by the Frontiers Research Foundation to address the colossal and urgent  facing our planet.  As a National Nominating Body, Queen鈥檚 University may put forth three candidates to the National Representative Body (NRB) 鈥 the Royal Society of Canada 鈥 who then submits three candidates for nomination. The Frontiers Planet Prize Jury of 100 selects a national champion from each country to advance to the international competition. Three International Champions will be selected to receive a prize of 1 million USD to advance their important breakthrough research. 

The Frontiers Planet Prize will be awarded to the best research published in established peer-reviewed scientific journals, with robust peer review and transparent publication procedures. The acceptance date of the article must fall within the 2 years prior to the launch of the competition (date of acceptance: 1 November 2023 to 31 October 2025).

Who can apply

Scientific excellence is the default principle to participate in the Frontiers Planet Prize, with each nomination providing actionable solutions to bring us back into the safe operating space of the . The Frontiers Planet Prize accepts articles published in scientific journals from all around the world with robust peer review and transparent publication procedures. 

Breakthrough science across all disciplines are welcome, on condition it is focused on Planetary Boundaries and presents original research findings or insightful reviews and syntheses. For contributions to be considered for the Frontiers Planet Prize, the following criteria must be met:

  • The research outlines actionable solutions or pathways that can be implemented in policies, adapted commercially, or otherwise contribute to keep global development within Planetary Boundaries
  • The research advances the scientific understanding and quantification of Planetary Boundaries. It explores how Planetary Boundaries are affected or impact life support systems/the Earth system or investigates the implications of adopting Planetary Boundaries thinking across disciplines, sectors and activities/applications
  • The research must connect to several Planetary Boundaries at the Earth system scale. Research that explores interactions/relations between multiple Planetary Boundaries will be prioritized

How to apply

Researchers who wish to participate in the prize should submit an Expression of Interest to  Mona Rahman (Research Awards Officer) by Monday, August 18, 2025 (5 pm). The email must include the name of the lead scientist (i.e. the author who best represents the team) and a PDF copy of the published paper/article.

Successful candidates will be contacted by Dr. Rahman and asked to complete the  to be sent to the RSC. Final deadline for submission is October 17 (8 pm EDT).
