John Deutsch Institute for the Study of Economic Policy

Bearing the name of John Deutsch, a renowned Canadian economist, Queen鈥檚 alumnus, public servant, and former Principal of Queen鈥檚 University, the John Deutsch Institute for the Study of Economic Policy (JDI) is a research institute in the Department of Economics at Queen's. For more than 40 years, the JDI has been supporting public policy research at Queen鈥檚.

The JDI鈥檚 central purpose is to encourage and promote academic research that informs policymaking in Canada and abroad by focussing on policy-relevant quantitative research in economics and related fields. In particular, the Institute aims to draw attention to policy-relevant research that is being done by academics, helping it gain the attention of policymakers and shape policy. It also provides research funding to faculty and graduate students working on policy issues.

The JDI encourages academic economists to devote research attention to important questions involving government policy. It does this by providing students and faculty with outlets through which they can offer their insights, including Economics & Policy, a student reviewed and edited journal that publishes research reviews and policy insights. The JDI also runs conferences and workshops that bring together policymakers and researchers working on similar policy questions, and helps support the Department of Economics鈥 professional education programs that teach cutting-edge analytical tools to policy practitioners around the globe.

    Professional Programs

The JDI assists with administration and engagement on the three professional education programs in the Department of Economics. These programs are the graduate Risk Policy and Regulation Diploma (RPRD), the Program on Investment Appraisal and Risk Analysis (PIAR), and the Certified Professional Impact Analysis (CPIA). RPRD is a unique program in Canada, providing students with training in the issues surrounding financial risk management and financial regulation. The PIAR and CPIA programs provide analytical tools to professionals working in international development and social sector programs.
