Spring 2024 - On Having Given Up the Piano

 

I was lucky enough to grow up in a house with a glossy mahogany baby grand piano, courtesy of my mother, who still played quite a bit 鈥 mostly Robert Schumann鈥檚 Kinderszenen (鈥淪cenes from Childhood鈥), Opus 15. In retrospect, it is ironic that those pieces should have been the soundtrack to my childhood, given how much I loved the piano and yet how easily I walked away from it 鈥 as one does when one鈥檚 teacher says that two hours of daily practice will be inadequate and that nothing less than three hours will suffice 鈥

She is the author of seven books of poetry, four novels for adults, three novels for children, and a work of literary history. She lives in Toronto, where she works as a freelance editor and is learning to paint.
