Jorja (National University of Singapore)

I had come to Queen鈥檚 with the intention of applying to study abroad, and when I finally got the chance to experience it, it turned out to be everything I had hoped for and more.

I learned a lot about myself, not just academically, but personally. I figured out what I really valued for my future, how to build a new community in a different place completely from scratch, and how to push myself outside of my comfort zone to try things I never would have done otherwise.

The friendships I made abroad were unlike anything else. Meeting people both local and from all over the world and becoming like family almost instantly was such a unique part of the experience. We bonded over countless meals at hawker centres, clubs and classes at , stories from back home and got caught in afternoon rainstorms on the way back from class (always carry an umbrella!).

Some of my favorite memories were the small everyday things like grabbing kaya toast at Ya Kun for breakfast, getting kopi while caf茅 hopping across the city, or buying fresh fruit from a stand (so much good fruit!), as well as bigger adventures like exploring festivals and local celebrations together or booking spontaneous weekend trips. Because we've shared so many unique experiences, our connections feel even stronger, and my friendships are something I鈥檒l carry with me for a lifetime.

Living in Singapore was incredible, with greenery seamlessly integrated into the city's architecture, so much to explore and an efficient transit system that made exploring every corner effortless, whether by MRT to a new district or by bus across the island. On top of that, the city has a seemingly endless array of food options to try, from world famous hawker stalls to hidden gems tucked away in malls.

Academically, was amazing. They offered such a wide range of courses, and I was able to take classes I never thought I鈥檇 have the chance to try, including a field course in Thailand. As an environmental student, this experience was also especially enriching, giving me the chance to apply my knowledge and learn from a completely different perspective. It also has tons of opportunities to get involved in student life, from numerous student clubs to frequent campus events.

One of my other favorite parts of exchange was the chance to travel beyond Singapore. During my stay, I visited eight different countries in Southeast Asia, with Thailand and Malaysia quickly becoming my favorites, so much so that I returned to both multiple times. The ability to study during the week and then explore some of the most fascinating places in the world on weekends was an entirely unique and rewarding experience.

Looking back, studying abroad in Singapore changed me in ways I never could have predicted. It was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life, and I would recommend it to anyone who has the chance.
