Au has broad research interests in the history of contemporary China and its intersections with global developments in the twentieth century. His work examines the social and political transformations of Republican China under the influence of globalization, with particular attention to postwar reconstruction, international humanitarianism, and forced displacement. He previously worked as a journalist for The Straits Times, where he covered global affairs and East Asian politics.
