This seminar will examine a number of key developments and historical moments in European history from ca. 1650 to ca. 1850. The course is divided into several focused units that will allow us to explore specific themes and historical junctures in depth, such as the slave trade; the Enlightenment; the family and gender relations; the French Revolution; and the emergence of nationalist movements in the nineteenth century. Within each module, we will examine different methodologies and approaches to the study of history. Course readings will be a combination of primary and secondary sources. The course will also include a handful of workshops devoted to research and writing.
