Teaching Position Available鈥擶inter 2026

ENGL 275 Race, Migration, and the Canadian Nation

The Department of English Literature and Creative Writing at Queens University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates interested in teaching the course ENGL 275 Race, Migration, and the Canadian Nation. This is an on-campus lecture-based course with an anticipated enrolment of 90 students; teaching assistants will be assigned based on enrolment. Like all 200-level ENGL courses, it is open to all students in second year and above. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of expertise, combined with evidence of teaching experience. A doctoral degree in a field related to the subject of this course will be considered an asset. The appointment is for the Winter Term 2026 (1 January鈥30 April 2026).

  • In addition to having relevant subject expertise, successful candidates will also:
  • demonstrate knowledge of Universal Design for Learning principles in designing this course,
  • be available to meet with students during weekly office hours
  • provide students with timely and constructive feedback
  • be comfortable supervising a team of Teaching Assistants.

Course Description: 

ENGL 275 Race, Migration, and the Canadian Nation

This course explores the relationships between race, migration, and multiculturalism in Canadian contexts. It provides students with the cultural and historical knowledge required to critically engage with urgent contemporary concerns such as national identity, settler culture, racism, diaspora, and activism in the name of justice and equality.

Learning Hours: 120 (36 Lecture, 84 Private Study)  

Requirements: Prerequisite (Level 2 or above) or (6.0 units of ENGL)

Offering Faculty: Faculty of Arts and Science  

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Analyze the dominant narratives of the Canadian nation to critically act upon their legacy and impact.
  2. Examine alternate and often marginalized perspectives on the formation of the Canadian nation.
  3. Explain the role of race and migration in the constitution of the national imaginary.
  4. Deploy cross-disciplinary concepts and vocabulary to redefine belonging and citizenship.
  5. Engage with the past to alter and imagine the nation's future and your place in it as a global citizen.
