'Training the Early Modern Heart' 
Conference and Events 

To mark the occasion of Elizabeth Hanson and Marta Straznicky’s retirements, the English Department at Queen’s University, in conjunction with the Sister Sophie Foundation, will be holding a conference entilied ‘Training the Early Modern Heart’ on 29-31 July 2025 in Kingston, Ontario. The conference examines constructions of the “heart” and the methods and locations of its “training” in sixteenth and seventeenth-century English literature and culture.

Film Screening: Romeo + Juliet, dir. Baz Luhrmann (1996)

What: Baz Luhrmann’s gleefully inventive Hollywood debut retains the poetic dialog of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy but is otherwise a modernized adaptation, transplanting the tale to Verona Beach where the Montagues and the Capulets, two warring family empires, must contend with the romantic yearnings of the titular star-crossed lovers.

Rare Books Exhibition: Books in Shakespeare’s Heart

What: An exhibition of rare books from Shakespeare’s world.

Where: W.D. Jordan Rare Books and Special Collections, Douglas Library, ˴Ƭ

When: 29th July through 10th October 2025

Price: Free

 

Public Lecture: Going Viral with Shakespeare

What: A celebration of the fascinating, quirky, and heartfelt experiences that have shaped an adventuring academic's lifelong search for long-lost copies of one of the world’s most valuable books – the Shakespeare First Folio.

Early Music Recital: “Tune thy Musicke to thy Hart”: Attending to the Heart through Early Modern English Song

What: Join world-renowned early music specialists for an intimate concert of some of the finest repertoire from the English Renaissance; featuring songs that work on the heart to soften and open it to love.

Where: Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts 

When: Thurs 31st July, 1.30pm (doors open 1pm)
