Welcome to the website for Antiquities Through Modern Eyes!

Our project creates a dynamic partnership between the fields of Conservation and Classics at Queen’s University in order to provide novel experiences with ancient art for the public. By leveraging the unique Diniacopoulos Collection of ancient artifacts at Queen’s University and access to the venue of Kingston City Hall, we seek to train emerging scholars to work across disciplines to produce an exhibition and symposium that invigorates the past for present and future audiences. This project was funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

The Diniacopoulos Collection, a resource shared between the Department of Classics and Archaeology and the Department of Art History and Art Conservation, has been used by students since its acquisition in 2001 to further knowledge of antiquities from the Mediterranean region and their preservation and treatment needs. Antiquities Through Modern Eyes seeks to bring together these two departments to investigate a number of ancient artifacts, culminating in an exhibition on view at Kingston City Hall from April 2023 to March 2024.

Antiquities Through Modern Eyes has three key themes: the role of polychromy, or color, in understanding an object’s history and making process; the degree to which collaboration between archaeologists and conservators can illuminate information that may have been lost over time; and evidence of makers, both ancient and modern, that have contributed to the life of objects. These themes are reflected both in our physical exhibition cases at Kingston City Hall and within this website.

We invite you to explore this website to learn more about our research, our team, and our collaboration. Please visit our exhibition in Kingston City Hall and join us for our opening day symposium on April 5th, 2023, at 3:00 pm. Stay tuned! We will continually update the website with our research results.

Click on the tabs below to view the details of the exhibition and symposium.
